Before the call
Choose one topic and four reviewed lines
- Pick one concrete topic your grandparent already knows, such as a garden, meal, photograph, neighborhood, or upcoming family event.
- Ask a trusted speaker familiar with the intended regional variety to review a greeting, one question, one follow-up, and one clarification phrase.
- Write the intended meaning beside each phrase. Do not rely on an unreviewed automatic translation for the live call.
- Remove medical, financial, immigration, account, address, and other private family details from practice notes.
During the call
Use clarification instead of pretending to understand
Agree on one reviewed way to ask for repetition or a slower pace. If a phrase does not fit the moment, switch to a language both people understand or say you will check it after the call. A successful practice call can be brief and imperfect.
After the call
Record your learning, not private family disclosures
Note what you understood, where you paused, and which phrase needs another human review. Do not record the call or copy a relative's private story into the planner without clear permission.
